Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), DER Management Systems (DERMS), and How to Monetize the Markets for Customer Programs

This training explores how DERs impact wholesale energy markets, distribution grids, utility operations and end-use customers — many of whom are now energy “prosumers.” Participants will also gain insight into the regulatory landscape shaping DER participation, including FERC Order 2222, and how DERMS can help utilities manage and optimize DERs in a way that is both operationally effective and financially viable.
Learning Objectives:
• Explain FERC Orders creating and implementing Wholesale Market Operations in ISOs/RTOs and how those markets impact retail transactions and programs.
• Explain what a DERMS is, decide whether you need one, and identify what it can do for you.
• Summarize what a DER is through industry definitions, operational characteristics, and utility program examples.
• Describe how to develop a business case for a DER regardless of the technology and understand the ability to “value stack” the operations for optimal performance.

He spent over 22 years working within regulated utilities in Michigan managing multiple utility programs, products, and services in Demand Side Management in support of utility generation planning and clean energy goals.
