Session #2 – Creative Market-Based DER Aggregation Approaches for Capturing Demand-Side Resources for Resiliency and Reliability

With looming climate change issues increasingly stressing the power grid, DER aggregation efforts are more and more becoming a central element of resource planning horizons in several US regions aimed at supporting grid operations considering continuous and severe weather events. This session will focus on creative DER aggregation resource efforts in California and elsewhere driven by DER aggregation companies operating across multiple markets including the small and large commercial, industrial, and residential market sectors. With significant advances in DER aggregation techniques and approaches delivered through third-party implementers, an increasing number of customers can deploy these resources and meaningfully contribute to state and regional efforts aimed at stabilizing the power grid.

      Jennifer Chamberlin  is the Executive Director of Market Development and Regulatory Affairs at CPower Energy Management, the national leader in grid flexibility and reliability solutions. CPower unlocks the value of customers’ DERs and works across 17,000 sites and 60 local energy programs in partnership with grid operators and utilities.  Jennifer brings more than 25 years of expert competitive market and policy advocacy to CPower’s Demand Response business. She has extensive experience advocating for, developing, and analyzing market rules and procurement policy across the competitive energy industry.

      Demand Response Program Manager, GridPoint

      Rachel Marcus is a demand response program manager at GridPoint, a leader in building energy management and optimization technology that decarbonizes commercial buildings and drives grid modernization. With over a decade of experience driving sustainability programs, policy and customer success, Marcus brings a unique perspective to demand response (DR) planning and distributed energy resource (DER) procedures. At GridPoint, she is responsible for accelerating the growth of grid interactive assets within DR programming and DER partnerships.   Previously,  Marcus led a number of DR and smart metering efforts, customer success strategies and peak shaving programming at industry-leading companies, such as Voltus, EnelX and EnerNOC.  Additionally, she spent time helping develop and pass Act 129 in Pennsylvania to reduce energy consumption, forming the Delaware Sustainable Energy Utility and mandating renewable portfolio standards in Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland.

      Marcus earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry from the University of Delaware.

      John Anderson

      Senior Director of Market Innovation, OhmConnect

      John Anderson is Senior Director of Market Innovation at OhmConnect, Inc., an Oakland, California-based provider of demand management services to residential electricity customers. He is responsible for identifying novel applications of OhmConnect’s technology that create value for both electric grid operators and end-use customers. An early employee at OhmConnect, John helped the business grow from hundreds to hundreds of thousands of customers in California. More recently, he played a leading role in OhmConnect’s expansion into the ERCOT (Texas) and NYISO (New York) markets. John holds a BA in Economics from the University of Calgary, an MPhil in Economics from the University of Oxford, and a PhD in Economics from Stanford University.
