Decarb the Parks: How 5 National Parks Charted Their Course to Decarbonize Buildings and Transportation

March 21 @ 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM EDT

Event Details

From the unique ecosystem of Isle Royale National Park to the historic lighthouses of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Lake Superior’s five National Parks boast natural and cultural resources cherished by generations. The park facilities, however, have been run primarily on fossil fuels which are a major source of carbon pollution. Each year, millions of guests visit the five National Parks of Lake Superior, which presents an opportunity to demonstrate the importance of environmental stewardship from the very moment visitors step into these incredible natural and cultural surroundings. To take advantage of this opportunity, a Decarb the Parks Plan was developed to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and pursue net-zero energy consumption for buildings and land transportation across the five National Parks of Lake Superior:

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore
Grand Portage National Monument
Isle Royale National Park
Keweenaw National Historical Park
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

In this webinar you will learn how this Decarb the Parks Plan focuses on off-the-shelf, proven technologies that are available to decarbonize without compromising park operations, comfort, or usability by focusing on buildings and land-based transportation. This plan is based on a life-cycle cost analysis of electrification, efficiency, and renewable energy options, and demonstrating how by slightly increasing the life-cycle cost, the parks could fully decarbonize.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the tradeoffs between air-source and ground-source heat pumps for up-front costs and operating efficiency
  2. Demonstrate a process to evaluate existing energy consumption and create a decarbonization plan for any organization
  3. Distinguish the tradeoffs between the lowest-cost decarbonization path and full decarbonization
