Designing a grid that flexes with the future.

The Demand Flexibility Topic Committee is where AESP members come together to explore how customer behavior, technology, and market design can unlock a smarter, more responsive grid. We focus on real strategies that align system needs with customer experiences—building the foundation for a more dynamic energy future.

We bring together utilities, implementers, tech providers, regulators, and researchers to answer the big questions:

  • How can flexible demand boost grid reliability and decarbonization?
  • What program designs actually move customers?
  • And how do we build systems that are both technically sound and human-centered?

Through collaboration, case studies, and practical insight-sharing, this committee turns big ideas into actionable playbooks.

Our focus areas include:

  • Flexible Load Management – demand response, managed charging, and device-level control

  • DER Integration – aligning behind-the-meter resources with grid needs

  • Dynamic Pricing & Tariff Design – structuring incentives for customer and system value

  • Customer Engagement – using behavioral insights and design thinking to make flexibility simple and rewarding

  • Market & Policy Alignment – navigating wholesale markets, aggregation, and regulation

  • Measurement & Verification – assessing impact, persistence, and value stacking

Whether you’re launching a virtual power plant (VPP), refining demand response, or crafting the next generation of dynamic pricing, this committee is your space to share ideas, learn from peers, and help shape the grid of tomorrow.
